4 Reasons You Should Stay at Kicking Horse Lodging During the Winter

When winter blankets the Canadian Rockies, there's a distinct magic in the air beckoning adventurers and snow sport enthusiasts from near and far. Nestled in the heart of pristine Golden lies Kicking Horse Mountain, a winter wonderland unlike any other. As the snowflakes gently fall and the mountains don their glistening white coats, there's no better place to experience the essence of the season.

The ultimate destination for an enchanting winter escape, Kicking Horse Lodging offers unbeatable access to epic skiing and snowboarding, cozy accommodations, a fantastic dining scene, and so much more. So pack your thermals, grab your skis, and let's discover all the reasons to stay at Kicking Horse Lodging this winter.

Convenient Location

One of the biggest reasons why stay at Kicking Horse Lodging is its proximity to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Whether you stay in our suites or a vacation home, you'll be right on the mountain and enjoy immediate access to the lifts. Simply put on your ski gear and head out your door!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, however. There are also many other activities and attractions nearby, including off-slope outdoor pursuits like hiking, ice skating, and tubing. Plus, with the quaint town of Golden just a 15-minute shuttle ride or drive away, you'll also be close to excellent dining, drinking, shopping, museums, and more.

Nearby Winter Activities

Kicking Horse Lodging in winter opens the door – quite literally – to an incredible range of outdoor activities. Of course, the ski resort is the most famous among them, and for good reason. With over 120 trails and a 1,315-metre vertical drop, it’s one of the largest and steepest resorts in North America. The fourth-highest vertical on the continent, to be specific!

And while 60% of the runs cater to advanced skiers, there are plenty of gentler grades for beginners and more casual skiers, too. The resort is especially well-known for its five dramatic terrain bowls, making it a favorite among downhill skiers. However, snowboarders have plenty to love, as well!

Off the slopes, there are several other ways to enjoy the snow. Cross-country skiers will appreciate the beginner-friendly groomed runs through Golden Golf Course. You may also consider driving to stunning Yoho National Park for a greater variety of trails, just 40 minutes from Kicking Horse Lodging.

Looking for a slower pace? Check with the front desk to rent complimentary snowshoes (just one perk of our Stay | Well Amenities program), and head to nearby Cedar Lake.

Adrenaline-seekers may want to hop on a snowmobile and explore over 200 kilometres of trails. Golden is highly regarded for its terrain! Local outfitters offering rentals and guided tours include Snow Peak Rentals, Rocky Mountain Riders, and White n Wild Adventures.

One of the other reasons to stay at Kicking Horse is that the resort also offers lower-key, family-friendly options. Before taking a few laps around the skating rink, fly down the fun tubing and sledding area, located right in the base area. Complemented by music and fire pits, it’s the jolliest escape to spend an evening. One night a week, you can also watch (or take part in!) hockey games.

A Variety of Accommodation

Beyond the fantastic location and unmatched access to winter fun, Kicking Horse Lodging is the most comprehensive accommodation in the area. There are three distinct options: Palliser Lodge, Glacier Mountaineer Lodge, and Aspen Vacation Homes. Each one offers a unique atmosphere and benefits, catering to a variety of needs.

Those seeking as much time on the slopes as possible will want to prioritize Palliser Lodge. With super convenient ski-in, ski-out access, it seamlessly blends in with the mountain surroundings. Not only will you enjoy tremendous views, but select condos also have hot tubs for a relaxing post-skiing soak. Accommodations range from traditional hotel-like guest rooms with a king bed to one- or two-bedroom suites with fully-furnished kitchens and balconies. There's also a fitness centre, underground parking, and ski storage.

Alternatively, the Glacier Mountaineer Lodge is at the heart of the resort. Located right at the base of the gondola, the hotel offers a true respite from everyday hustle and bustle. It’s loaded with amenities, including a sauna for soothing sore muscles, a shared hot tub, and a fitness centre. The lodge is next to Kicking Horse Plaza, with various dining and shopping options. Rooms run the gamut from traditional guest rooms to three-bedroom suites – pets are welcome, too!

Finally, there are self-contained vacation homes for independent travellers and those seeking even more tranquility. A bit removed from the main village, these properties are ideally set up for romantic getaways or making family memories. They have patios with hot tubs, spacious living areas, fully-equipped kitchens, and fireplaces for gathering at the end of active days. There are cabins for up to eight guests, and despite feeling remote, the resort is still within walking distance.

Dining, Drinking and Shopping

Need more reasons to stay at Kicking Horse Lodging in winter? Between hitting the slopes and recovering to get back out there, there are several dining and drinking options. The ski resort has many year-round restaurants, including Peaks Grill at the base and stunning Eagle’s Eye at the mountain peak. And Double Black serves some of the best coffee in town. However, ski season means two additional restaurants open: casual Whitetooth Grill and Western-themed Winston Bar and Bistro. Come for an evening game of life-sized Jenga and a drink!

You may also want to venture to nearby Golden for an evening to discover even more options. From fine dining in a mansion-like setting at Cedar House to margaritas and tacos at Reposados, there’s an option for every taste. Continue the night with cocktails, beers, and pizza at hipster Riverhouse Tavern or excellent brews at Whitetooth Brewing Company. So many spots to try!

Before starting your evening, shop around Golden for treasures you want to bring home. Whether it’s a new book to get lost in, artwork, or a fashionable boutique, the mountain town has a lovely variety of options.
