Take a Break from the Slopes & Explore Golden's Relaxation Scene

It's no secret that the Canadian Rockies are among the world's premier winter sports destinations. And with epic, diverse terrain, breathtaking alpine scenery, top-tier snow conditions, and a nice long season, it comes as no surprise that more and more people are discovering Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, in particular.

Located just outside the small mountain town of Golden, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort offers not only great skiing and snowboarding, but family-friendly fun, a variety of accommodation options, and plenty of lower-key off-slope activities, too.

Here, adrenaline-pumping snow sports are just the beginning. Whether you're looking for some things to do between runs or need to recharge with a tranquil getaway this winter, Golden has a wide range of relaxing activities.

Catch a Movie

One of the most relaxing Golden activities is taking in a movie; it's perfect for rainy or super cold days, too. Kicking Horse Movies, also often called Golden Cinema, is a charming, family-owned local theater with two screens and stadium-style seating. Although the theater is small, it shows the latest Hollywood releases and even shows some 3-D movies.

Take in a Live Performance with Kicking Horse Culture

Immerse yourself in Golden's cultural vibes by catching the latest show with Kicking Horse Culture. From concerts and festivals to theatre performances, and community events, they host a little of everything in town, all year long.

Visit the Golden Museum

Speaking of culture, don't miss the town museum when you're thinking about what to do in Golden. Small but fascinating, at the Golden Museum, you can explore the town's rich history through a nice variety of exhibits and artifacts. Learn about things like the significance of the historic Swiss guides, how the Kicking Horse River got its name, and the original trading post that got it all started. The museum is open Monday through Friday year-round.

The gallery and gift shop house handmade creations from over 150 local and regional artists, ranging from framed fine art paintings and prints to small souvenirs and home goods. Throughout the year, the gallery also hosts a variety of exhibits, special projects, and workshops. It's open Monday through Saturday, as well as Sundays in December.

There's nothing quite like enjoying a refreshing craft beer on a cold winter day, especially after working hard on the slopes. Local brewery Whitetooth Brewing Co. is a haven for all manner of beer enthusiasts, offering a selection of outdoor and adventure-themed craft brews with memorable names.

Try the award-winning Speed Metal Stout or Thread the Needle Witbier or, if you can't decide, order a flight. Whitetooth Brewing is also family-friendly every day until 4:00 pm (after that, it's 19 and up only), making it one of the best Golden activities for folks with young kids.

Indulge in a Spa Treatment

Few things are as relaxing and rejuvenating as a spa treatment in the wintertime especially if you have tired, sore muscles from being on the slopes!

Thankfully, Golden has several spa options where you can indulge in some well-deserved pampering, and a few are close to Kicking Horse Mountain. Choose from a wide range of services and treatments, including massage, facials, body wraps, manicures and pedicures, and more.

Go on the Golden River Walk

For a leisurely activity that will also let you enjoy The Great Outdoors, take a stroll on the River Walk and accross one of the most popular Golden attractions: the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge. The postcard-worthy bridge spans 151 feet across the Kicking Horse River downtown, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. When you’re ready to hide from the cold, make sure to venture into downtown Golden to explore the shops and restaurants.

Fun fact: The pedestrian bridge is the longest freestanding timber frame bridge in all of Canada!

Ride the Scenic Gondola

If you're not afraid of heights, this is one of the most relaxing things to do in Golden. And if you are, well, then it's one of the more thrilling activities! Year-round, you can ride the Golden Eagle Express gondola up to the summit, at 2,350 meters (7,700 feet) elevation. You'll get incredible panoramic views, with or without skis.

Note that during ski season, this is the same lift that transports skiers and snowboarders. If you aren't skiing, be sure to ask for a scenic ride ticket.

Since you're up there anyway, see if you can snag reservations or pop in for a meal at Eagle's Eye Restaurant. It's Canada's highest restaurant in elevation, and the views are out of this world. Pro tip: dinner reservations include your gondola tickets.

Shop at the Holiday Market

If you happen to be in Golden during the holiday season, don't miss the Holiday Market. Hosted by the Golden Farmers Market, this festive market is a highly anticipated annual event featuring local crafts, artisanal goods, and holiday treats from over 40 vendors. It's a great way to take a break from the slopes; plus it offers an opportunity to pick up a few unique gifts and soak up the small-town holiday spirit.

Not visiting during the holiday season? No problem! Enjoy the local offerings year-round in downtown Golden including boutiques, artisan studios and galleries offering books, household goods, jewellery, sporting goods, gifts, stationery, electronic equipment and more.
